Impact saint patrick high school today and tomorrow
Your charitable gift will provide vital support for our projects, activities and goals
Back in 1957 when Louis DeSalvo graduated from St. Giles grade school, he knew where he wanted to go to high school – St. Pat's. Although back then, students had to go to the high school in their district and St. Pat's was not an official option for him, Lou pursued becoming a Shamrock. With the help of Br. Paul, Lou began his high school years at Belmont and Austin.
Lou blossomed during the next four years. As an avid Business student, he also served as Council Treasurer, ran track and was a member of the Coin Collectors Club. Lou's fond memories of his dedicated teachers influenced his decision to attend DePaul University where he received a B.S. in Business and later returned to get a Master's in Education. "The Brothers always encouraged you to do your best and they stressed the importance of learning."
While there was no one single defining moment during his time here at St. Pat's, Lou believes that it was the educational process over the course of four years that made an impact on his life. He believes that a good education, which he strongly feels he received at St. Pat's, will ensure success in life. The Christian Brothers left a lasting impact on him as educators which would eventually influence his decision to become an educator himself.
"Teaching is the path to help young people succeed. Without educators, there wouldn't be any doctors, lawyers, CPA's or other professionals." The Brothers stressed the importance of the education profession and their dedication to their students positively influenced Lou on his career path.
After graduating from college, Lou took a teaching position at Providence St. Mel for a year and then joined the faculty at Lyons Township High School where he taught business for 34 years before retiring in 2000. After retiring, Lou became reacquainted with St. Pat's when he joined the President's Council and was invited by Brother Konrad to attend a reception honoring those donors who give an annual gift of $2,500 or more. In the process of becoming reconnected to the school, Lou took his generosity a step further and decided to include St. Pat's in his estate plans.
Lou is currently one of 79 members of the Anam Cara Heritage Society. This Society honors and recognizes those individuals who have made provisions for Saint Patrick High School by naming Saint Patrick as beneficiary in a will, trust, life insurance policy, or other planned giving vehicle. "Saint Patrick is a fine institution – which is why it is still in existence today." With the help of Lou and others in the society, St. Pat's can look to the future.
